SVSU posts 48-45 victory at Purdue Northwest

WESTVILLE, Ind. -- Returning to GLIAC action with the new year, the Saginaw Valley State University Women's Basketball squad hit the road for a game at Purdue Northwest University on Thursday evening. The Cardinals rebounded and had a solid second half of play, posting a 48-45 victory over the Pride on the road. 

The first half saw the Pride outscore the Cardinals by a 26-15 margin. SVSU hit on just 18.2% of its shots while Purdue Northwest was 37.5% from the floor. After the opening 20 minutes, Maddie Barrie and Hannah Settingsgaard each had five points to lead offensively. Abby Duffy had eight boards to lead SVSU. 

The third quarter saw the Cards post a 15-7 advantage, trimming the deficit to 33-30. Duffy scored seven points in the frame and had a tally of 15 rebounds through the third. 

Saginaw Valley continued and claimed their first lead since 3-0 with the score 43-41 after Kaitlyn Geers connected on a layup with 3:27 to play.  

In the fourth, the Cardinals continued the solid play and closed-out for a 48-45 victory after an 18-12 advantage. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Duffy grabbed a career-best 21 rebounds for the second straight contest. She added a game-high 14 points, with 13 of those coming in the second half. She was named the Meijer "Player of the Game."
  • Settingsgaard added 13 points and had five boards for the visitors with with five steals and two blocks.
  • Geers recorded double-digit scoring as well, posting 10 points with four rebounds, two steals and an assist.
  • The Pride posted a 47-41 edge on the glass while the SVSU bench outscored PNW 15-14.

SVSU returns home on Saturday (Jan. 5) for a contest with Parkside. Tip-off will be 1:00 p.m. from O'Neill Arena for the league contest.
