UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Before hitting the Thanksgiving weekend break, the Cardinal Women's Basketball team hosted Ohio Dominican in a regional contest at O'Neill Arena. Saginaw Valley fell 72-70 after a last second shot to head to a 0-3 start on the year. ODU heads to a 3-2 overall record.
The Cardinals jumped out on top of the Panthers at the conclusion of the first quarter, with Abby Duffy posting the first four buckets for SVSU. Maddie Barrie and Hannah Settingsgaard both played a huge part in the remainder of the quarter, finishing on top of ODU by one, 17-16.
Even though the Panthers responded in the first three minutes of action to take back the lead over the Cardinals, Barrie's four triples in a row sent ODU to trail 35-26 with just over five minutes remaing.
After a triple from Ashley Buchholz, the Panthers scored the remaining two buckets to finish the half behind, 38-33.
At the halftime break, Barrie led the books with 16 points, while Duffy earned 11 points and eight boards.
ODU came out hot in the second half, outscoring SVSU 12-8 in the first six minutes of action to only trail by one, 46-45.
Back and forth battle gave Ohio Dominican the lead for just a few seconds before another Barrie three earned the Cardinals back their lead 51-49.
Ohio Dominican would tie up the game two more times in the third quarter, but would never regain the lead. Cards and Panthers remained knotted up 55 all in heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Neither team was going down without a fight in the fourth quarter, with the game coming down to the last basket which fell in the Panthers favor, as ODU took the victory with a last second triple, 72-70.
Inside the Boxscore
- Duffy had another double-double, earning herself the Meijer Player of the Game accolades. She earned her season high of 25 points and 16 boards. Duffy added four assists, as well.
- Barrie earned her career high of 21 points with one assist, earning her career-high as a Cardinal
- Settingsgaard added three boards, three assists and 12 points
- Julia Cianferra recorded two triples
- Maddie Maloney added the team-high of five assists while adding three boards

The Cardinals are off until Thursday, Nov. 29 when they host Michigan Tech in the GLIAC opener. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at O'Neill Arena.
