ASHLAND, Ohio - The SVSU women's basketball team played the Grand Valley State University Lakers Saturday (Mar. 5) in the 2016 GLIAC Women's Basketball Semifinals, hosted by Ashland University in Kates Gymnasium. The Lakers would come out top in the matchup, using solid shooting to post a 76-51 victory.

The Lakers opened the game on a 10-0 run and the first SVSU bucket came at the 6:43 marker when Halee Nieman made good on a layup to cut the deficit to eight points. GVSU would then take a 17-9 lead and score the final 10 points of the opening quarter to hold a 27-9 edge.

Back-to-back buckets from Emily Wendling, followed by an Anna Hall jumper, helped cut the deficit to 12 points (27-15) with 8:18 showing in the second quarter. 

Grand Valley led by as many as 18 points, the last time coming at the 5:58 point of the second quarter with the score 33-18. 

Hannah Settingsgaard and Nieman nailed consecutive triples to make the score 33-21, but the Lakers would enter the half leading 43-26 despite a three-pointer from Abby Schlicher and a jumper from Katelyn Carriere

The Lady Cardinals outscored GVSU by a narrow 17-16 margin in the second quarter.

GVSU posted a 17-11 edge in the third quarter and would lead by a score of 60-37 after the first 30 minutes of play. SVSU got four points from Nieman and Katelyn Carriere in the frame, two from Alex Green and one from Settingsgaard.

The Lakers continued to hold the lead throughout the game, notching a 16-14 advantage in the fourth and final quarter to close the game out, 76-51.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Katelyn Carriere and Nieman each led the way for Saginaw Valley with 10 points. Carriere added four assists, three rebounds and a steal while Nieman had a pair of boards, two steals and a block.
  • Wendling posted a game-high eight rebounds in the contest, adding a trio of blocks and two assists. 
  • Hall added eight points, six boards, two assists and a pair of steals.
  • GVSU shot 50.0% (26-52) from the floor compared to SVSU's 29.0% (18-62). The Lakers hit on half of their three point attempts as well (11-22) while the Cards were just 4-of-16 from beyond the arc. 
  • The Lakers posted a 41-31 edge on the glass and slim 20-18 advantage in the paint. GVSU's bench outscored SVSU's, 33-13.

Katelyn Carriere earned Meijer "Player of the Game" honors after her team-best 10 points, adding four assists, three boards and a steal.
