Detroit, Mich. - The SVSU women's basketball team hit the road and faced Wayne State University in a Saturday (Jan. 9) afternoon matchup against the GLIAC South Division opponent in Detroit. The Cardinals got off to a solid start and would hold the lead wire-to-wire in claiming their fifth straight victory over the Warriors, 80-62.

The Lady Cardinals got career-high 18 points and fiverebounds from Grace Whelan and another double-double from Emily Wendling, who netted 18 points and 10 boards in the victory.

SVSU ran out to a 7-0 lead after Emily Wendling made a layup at the 7:18 marker of the opening quarter and a Katelyn Carriere three-pointer with nine ticks left in the frame gave the visitors a 26-17 edge after the first 10 minutes of play.

A pair of Wendling free throws mid-way through the second quarter at the 5:18 mark made the score 32-26 and the Lady Cards would hold the lead until Anna Hall connected on a jumper with 43 seconds left in the half to make the score 43-36 in SVSU's advantage, holding the seven point lead.

The lead reached double-digits when Danielle Carriere hit a jumper to make the score 51-40 with 6:02 showing on the clock in the third quarter. SV extended it to 18 points (63-45) after Wendling made a layup just under a minute showing on the clock.

Saginaw Valley held on to the advantage throughout the game, leading by as much as 20 points with 18 seconds left when Katelyn Carriere hit her fifth triple of the game to put the Cards at the 80-point mark for the fifth consecutive game.

WSU made a layup with five seconds left to make the score 80-62, which is what the final score would show as the clock struck zeroes.

From Head Coach Jamie Pewinski...

"That was a really physical battle today and it's great to get a road win! Once again, we had someone step up and have a big game when we needed them to! Today, it was Grace, who was able to score and post her career-high. And obviously, any time you have 21 assists and only eight turnovers, it's a great game!
