Short-Handed Cardinals Fall Short in Second Half at Michigan Tech, 73-67

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell on the road against Michigan Technological University today (Jan. 19), 73-67.

Saginaw Valley was able to overcome an early six point deficit to take their first lead at 18-15 on a Danielle Carriere (London, Ontario / John Paul II) triple with 11:13 to play in the first half.

Danielle Carriere managed to extend the Cardinal advantage to as many as ten points with another three point bucket in the final minute of play before halftime.

SVSU entered the locker room with a 39-32 lead after firing 46.7 percent from the field, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc.

Danielle Carriere recorded a career-high 15 points in the first half alone as she connected on 5-of-8 attempts from the floor and 3-of-4 from long distance.

The Cardinals struggled to maintain their advantage in the second half going just 4-for-13 while the Huskies started 11-for-17 from the field in the first ten minutes to take a 57-50 lead.

Saginaw Valley continued their best three-point shooting performance of the year when Paige Wright (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Northrop HS) trimmed the MTU lead to two (60-58) with seven minutes to play.

Michigan Tech answered with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes and held a 68-58 lead with 3:17 to go at the final media timeout.

The Lady Cardinals were unable to make the shots they needed down the stretch, including a three-point attempt in the final minutes that would have cut the deficit to three. The Huskies ultimately came away with the 73-67 victory.

SVSU finished the afternoon shooting 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the field and a season-high 56.2 percent (9-of-16) from three-point range. The Cardinals gave one of the top programs in the conference all they could handle despite dressing only eight players.

Danielle Carriere earned Meijer 'Player of the Game' honors with a career-high 18 points, while Emily Wendling (Flushing, Mich.) dropped in 13 points. Paige Wright tied her career best with eight points as Samantha Zirzow (Goodrich, Mich.) and Katelyn Carriere (London, Ontario / John Paul II) each added seven points apiece.

The loss drops SVSU to 6-9 overall and 4-7 in the GLIAC, while Michigan Tech improves to 11-5 on the year and 9-3 atop the conference standings.

Saginaw Valley will return to action on Thursday (Jan. 24) when they travel to battle Grand Valley at 6:00 PM.
