Saginaw Valley Falls Late at Tiffin, 67-62

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell at Tiffin University today (Dec. 1) by a final score of 67-62. The loss drops SVSU to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in the GLIAC, while the Dragons improve to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

After a long triple from Katelyn Carriere (London, Ontario / John Paul II) to open the scoring for SVSU, Emily Wendling (Flushing, Mich.) scored the next 11 points for the Cardinals as Saginaw Valley ran out to a 14-6 advantage at the 15:24 mark of the first half.

Tiffin proceeded to go on a 14-2 run over the next eight minutes as the Dragons held a 23-19 lead with under three minutes left in the half.

SVSU trailed 29-27 at the intermission as Wendling finished the first half with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field.

For the second straight game Saginaw Valley came out of the locker room and gained momentum in the opening minutes of the second half. The Cardinals went on a 9-0 run, which was capped off by a Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich.) jumper at the 17:05 mark to give SVSU the 36-31 lead.

Tiffin responded once again by going on a run midway through the second half to lead 45-40 with 8:55 remaining.

Samantha Zirzow (Goodrich, Mich.) converted on a pair of free throws and a layup on back-to-back possessions with seven minutes to play as the Cardinals knotted up the contest at 46-46.

SVSU trailed by five with 1:26 to go before Aysha Boston (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance HS) connected on a three-point bucket to cut the deficit to two, 57-55.

However, Saginaw Valley was unable to make shots and get defensive stops down the stretch as Tiffin took the victory, 67-62.

The SVSU offense was paced by Meijer 'Player of the Game' Emily Wendling who finished with 19 points and five rebounds, while Kristen Greene posted 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Aysha Boston dropped in 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting as Samantha Zirzow recorded 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Cardinals went to the free throw line just 12 times compared to 21 attempts for the Dragons. Tiffin also outscored SVSU in second chance points, 12-4.

The Lady Cardinals will return home next Saturday (Dec. 8) when they welcome No. 1 Ashland University for a 3:00 PM start.
