UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University Athletics is premiering a monthly 'Student-Athlete Spotlight' feature that will focus on Cardinal student-athletes and what it means for them to be a member of the SVSU Athletics family. The 'Spotlight' is presented by State Farm Insurance.
The first installment of the 'Student-Athlete Spotlight' series highlights Aysha Boston, a senior guard on the Cardinal women's basketball team. Boston, a Detroit native, was a two-sport athlete at Renaissance High School in basketball and swimming. Aysha had success at the high school level as she helped lead her basketball squad to city, district and regional championships.
Throughout her career at SVSU, Boston has grown both in the classroom and on the court. Aysha's hard work and determination has paid dividends the past two seasons, starting in all but five contests for the Cardinals. Her tenacity on the floor is evident as she has led SVSU in steals every year and also in assists the past two seasons. Boston is currently studying Sports Medicine at Saginaw Valley.
Aysha Boston reflects, in her own words, on her past three seasons as a member of the SVSU women's basketball program and what she has gained throughout her time as a Cardinal:
''It's a great day to be a Cardinal!' This is an expression I've grown to learn and love for the past three years. Without a doubt my experience at Saginaw Valley State University has molded me into the optimistic young woman that I've become today. I am extremely grateful for the welcoming atmosphere SVSU has provided me with; in addition to blessing me with the privilege to be what many dream and hope to be. I am a student-athlete!
Upon becoming a member of the women's basketball team I've come across some of the most memorable experiences and people of my life. Most memories have been remarkable while others were challenging. However, when it is all said and done I couldn't imagine myself being anywhere else. I couldn't imagine not having basketball in my life, period.
It wasn't until this year I realized how much basketball has taught me. Seniors are such a crucial part of any collegiate team solely because of their experience, discipline, dedication and leadership. I may have not perfected those traits in the past but with the new leadership over our team I'm confident in all my abilities this year.
As the final season of my college career approaches, I've found myself reflecting on how I can help create the perfect season for not only me but also my teammates and coaches. And one quote that constantly plays in my mind is "love what you do". Love is the key to success. And my key was given to me by SVSU. As a result, my college experience has been great and I owe that all to SVSU and the women's basketball team.'
