Saginaw Valley Drop Contest to Wayne State, 68-58

DETROIT, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team suffered a loss Thursday (Jan. 14), 68-58 to Wayne State University in a Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match-up.

The Cardinals entered the locker room at half time with the score deadlocked at 24.  Saginaw Valley was led by junior Brittany Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central HS), who had seven points and four rebounds, while senior Kelley Wesp (Cincinnati, Ohio / Glen Este HS) netted five points and grabbed four rebounds. 

Saginaw Valley would come out strong in the second half, going up as many as five with 13:45 left in the contest on a lay-up by Wesp.  The Cardinals were unable to hold the lead, however, as Wayne State came back with 8:32 left in the game.  Saginaw Valley was led by Burkhardt, who ended the night with 17 points and 10 rebounds to make that her third double-double of the season.  Wesp ended the night with 13 points and five rebounds and freshman Jasmine Kennedy (Harper Woods, Mich. / Grosse Point North HS) ended the night with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  It was the second-straight double-double for both Burkhardt and Kennedy.

With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 4-10 overall on the season and 2-7 in the GLIAC, while Wayne State improves to 3-11 overall on the season, and  1-8 in the GLIAC.  Saginaw Valley will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 16), when they travel to Midland to take on Northwood University.  Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
