Lady Cardinals Defeat Lake Superior At The Buzzer, 62-60

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball won a thrilling contest against visiting Lake Superior State University, 62-60 Saturday evening (Jan. 2).  The victory is the second-straight GLIAC win for the Cardinals, who now stand at 4-6 overall on the season with a 2-3 mark in the GLIAC.  With the loss, Lake Superior drops to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

SVSU, after trailing by five at the half, 27-22, re-gained the lead at the 18:22 mark in the second half.  Lake Superior State took the lead, though, via a three-pointer by Nicole Marshall to make the score 60-59 in the Lakers' advantage with 4.5 seconds left in the game.  After an SVSU timeout, the ball was inbounded to freshman guard Aysha Boston (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance HS), who drained a shot just in front of the half-court line to give the Cardinals a 62-60 advantage with 0.4 seconds on the clock.  Lake Superior could not get another shot off, and SVSU held on for the two-point victory.

Junior forward Brittany Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Cardinals in the contest.  Junior guard Kelley Wesp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este HS) had 12 points for SVSU, while Boston had 11, including the game-winner.  Freshman forward Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) had another solid effort, recording eight points, nine rebounds, and five blocks.

SVSU returns to action Jan. 7, as they travel to play Grand Valley State University in a 6:00 pm match-up in Allendale, Mich.
