Lady Cardinals Fall to Greyhounds, 77-59

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team dropped its first contest of the 2009-10 season to Indianapolis today (Nov. 21) by a score of 77-59.

The Cardinals trailed by as many as nine points midway through the first half of action, however managed to knot the score at 28 when freshman guard Aysha Boston (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance HS) sank a jump shot with 3:14 left in the half.  The Greyhounds took the lead as they sank a three point shot just 22 seconds before the half.  Junior forward Rhonda Gusa (Harbor Beach, Mich. / Delta CC) led Saginaw Valley in the first half with ten points and six rebounds.  Boston added eight points while freshman forward Jasmine Kennedy (Harper Woods, Mich. / Grosse Point North HS) pulled down six of her seven total rebounds in the first half.

Indianapolis came out strong in the second half as they built a 20-point lead with 5:49 remaining in the contest.  The Cardinals would be unable to recover from the Greyhound advantage as they eventually fell, 77-59.

Gusa was named the Meijer Player of the Game as she ended the night with seven rebounds, 14 point, an assist and a steal.  Boston would finish the game with 11 points and three rebounds.  Freshman forward Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich. / Powers Catholic HS) led the Cardinals in rebounds with eight and blocked four shots on the evening.

With the loss, Saginaw Valley falls to 1-1 overall on the season, while Indianapolis moves to 2-0 overall.  The Cardinals will return to the hardwood as they travel to take on Lewis University (Nov. 28).  Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
