Sam Black Named GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week

GLIAC -- SVSU Senior Track & Field student-athlete Sam Black has been named the GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week following his performance this past weekend at the Power Five Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan. 

Black had a big weekend for the Cardinals after competing in the Power 5 Invitational at the University of Michigan. Black earned a first-place finish, lifetime best, and NCAA DII automatic qualifying mark in the heptathlon of 5,394 points. This mark punches his ticket to the NCAA DII National Championships and places him 6th in the nation. Black opened day one with a lifetime best and first place finish in the 60-meter clocking in at 7.08. Next was the long jump where he placed fifth with a leap of 6.49-meters. He ended day one with top finishes in the shot-put and high jump competitions with marks of 13.59-meters and 2.02-meters. Black opened day two with a lifetime best in the 60-meter hurdles crossing the line at 8.37. He followed that performance with a third place finish in the pole vault clearing a bar of 3.95-meters. The senior ended the competition with a third lifetime best of 2:44.32 in the 1,000-meter run which was good for a second-place finish.

The Cardinals return to action Feb. 14-15 at the GVSU Big Meet in Allendale, Michigan.
