The Saginaw Valley State University track & field teams had several athletes compete in the 2016-17 indoor season openers on Friday (Dec. 2), as the Cardinals hosted the first day of the SVSU Holiday Classic and a trio of athletes traveled to run at the GVSU Holiday Open.

In the Holiday Classic, Sam Black was the only participant for the Cardinals in the heptathlon. He took first in the high jump portion of the event, clearing the bar with a height of 2.04 meters. The height is a personal best for Black in the high jump. He placed fourth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.37, fourth in the long jump with a distance of 6.20 meters and fourth in the shot put with a mark of 11.62 meters. The shot put distance is also a top career mark for Sam.

At Grand Valley, women's cross country national championship participant Allison Dorr had a stellar time in the 5,000 meter run, crossing the line with a time of 17:36.97. The time is a collegiate best for the sophomore in the 5,000 and after she won her heat with the mark.

Tom Goforth, fresh off his all-american finish at the 2016 cross country national championships, registered a time of 14:35.25 in the 5,000 meter run for a provisional qualifying mark. That time is also a collegiate best for Goforth in the event.

Joey Southgate also competed for the Cardinals in the 5,000 on the men's side, posting a time of 14:55.71.

Saginaw Valley hosts the second day of competition for the SVSU Holiday Classic at the SVSU Fieldhouse on Saturday. Events begin at noon with the field events while the running events begin at 1:00 p.m.
