Cardinal Swim & Dive Breaks Four More Records on Final Day of GLIAC Championships

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program had 16 record breaking performances this weekend including four more on Monday in the final day of the GLIAC Championships from the Holland Aquatic Center.

Alexa Hieber finished fourth in the 1650-yard freestyle with a NCAA DII B cut time of 17:11.32. That broke Alexandra Davis's record of 17:16.96 set back in 2019. Samantha Fowler also had a great performance in the mile with a seventh-place finish. Fowler finished the event with a time of 17:29.69 beating nine other swimmers.

Benjamin Wainman also set a record in the 1650-yard freestyle with his time of 15:25.49. He placed third and beat his previous record time from this season by five seconds. Alejandro Robles Ruiz, Eric Slabbert, Almos Szedlak, and Logan Fox teamed for a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a program record time of 2:56.81. Robles Ruiz's lead-off time of 43.67 also breaks the 100-yard freestyle record time he had last year of 43.78. He also put up a B cut time of 43.86 in the 100-yard freestyle taking second in the event earlier in the day.

At the end of the four days, the record board has been smashed for SVSU swim and dive. The teams both sit in fifth place overall with scores of 354.5 for the women and 407 for the men. Two championship victories for Robles Ruiz along with 16 record times cap off a monster of a weekend. The Cardinals have one more meet before the NCAA DII National Championships in March. On Saturday, February 17, SVSU hosts a Second Chance Meet at the Gerstacker Regional Aquatic Center at 1:00 PM EST.
