Softball drops two at Tiffin in league play

TIFFIN, Ohio -- Traveling to Ohio for a pair of road league games, the SVSU softball team played at Tiffin University on Saturday (Apr. 22) afternoon. The Cardinals dropped a close 1-0 matchup in eight innings in the day's first contest before falling by a 10-0 score in the second game in six innings.

Game One

Neither team was able to put any runs on the board through seven innings. Saginaw Valley had a runner in scoring position three different times, but nothing would develop and the game moved into the 8th frame.

The Cardinals got a two-out baserunner in the 8th, but a steal attempt resulted in the third out and gave the home Dragons the chance on offense. 

Tiffin got runners on first and second, who were both moved up on a sacrifice bunt. A passed ball would follow with one out, giving the Dragons an unearned run and the 1-0 extra-inning victory.

Inside the Boxscore

  • The Cardinals had four hits in the game and held Tiffin to one.
  • Anna Conard, Meredith Rousse, Evy Lobdell and Julia Miller all registered a hit.
  • Rousse added two steals on the basepaths and a walk, while Lobdell had a walk as well.
  • Sam Willman (12-5) took the loss in the circle, working 7.1 innings while allowing a single hit. She allowed the one unearned run, striking-out six batters and walking eight.

Game Two

The Dragons opened up a 5-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, using four hits. 

Tiffin then added another in the top of the 4th and four more in the 6th, securing the 10-0 win in the nightcap in six innings.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Saginaw Valley was limited to just two hits in game two, with Lobdell and Aubree Mouthaan each notching a base hit. Mouthaan's hit was a double for the Cardinals.
  • Rousse walked three times in the game and posted a stolen base.
  • Danielle Hamilton drew a walk in the game as well.
  • Annie Hansen (6-3) took the loss, working 4.0 innings and allowing six runs on six hits.
  • Conard tossed the final 2.0 innings, giving up four runs on five hits. 
  • Both pitchers had one strikeout and zero walks.

The Cards travel to play at the University of Findlay on Sunday afternoon. First pitch against the Oilers is set for Noon.
