Cardinals take opener at Ashland in GLIAC doubleheader

ASHLAND, Ohio - The SVSU softball team posted a league split at Ashland University on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals defeated the Eagles by a 4-1 count in the opener before falling by a narrow 1-0 deficit in the second contest. 

Game One

After the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the 2nd inning, The Cardinals posted a trio of runs in the top of the 3rd to grab the 3-1 advantage. SVSU got two runs when Danielle Hamilton and Lauren Bachert scored on an error and Julia Miller later ripped an RBI single that plated Evy Lobdell.

In the top of the 4th, the visitors pushed the lead to 4-1 when Bachert added an RBI single to her credit, pushing Becky Corbett across the plate. 

That lead would hold and the Cardinals claimed their ninth straight victory with the 4-1 final count.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Courtney Reeves was 2-3 in the first game for SV. 
  • Bachert went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Miller had the other RBI for SVSU on her hit. 
  • Aubree Mouthaan had the only extra-base hit for SV with her double, adding a walk.
  • Mouthaan and Becky Corbett each had a stolen base in the opener. 

In the Circle

  • Samantha Willman notched another victory, improving to 8-3 on the season in the complete game win. She allowed a single run on three hits, striking-out seven batters and walking two. 

Game Two

The Eagles notched the only run of the contest in the top of the 4th on an RBI single. That would be all the action offensively, as Ashland closed-out for the victory.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Saginaw Valley had three hits in the nightcap, with Reeves, Bachert and Meredith Rousse each reaching base safely. 

In the Circle

  • Annie Hansen took the loss in the circle. She allowed the lone run on six Eagle hits in her 4.2 innings. 
  • Anna Conard worked the final 2.1 innings, giving up a single hit and no runs. 

Up Next...

In a non-conference doubleheader that was originally set for 3 pm, the Cardinals will play at Malone in a twinbill with a first pitch scheduled for 10 am in Canton, Ohio. SVSU remains atop the GLIAC with its 18-7 overall record and 7-1 mark in league play.
