Softball Drops Two at Music City Invitational

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. - The SVSU softball team kicked-off the 2017 season with a doubleheader against NCAA Division II regional opponents on day one of the Music City Invitational. The Cardinals fell in the opening contest to Truman State by a 13-4 score before dropping a 7-1 decision to No. 19 Indianapolis in the second game. 

Game One - Truman State

The Bulldogs scored the game's first five runs in the top of the opening two innings, taking the 5-0 lead.

The Cardinals then scored four runs, trimming the deficit to 5-4 after four innings. The bottom of the second saw Meredith Rousse hit her first home run of the season while Evy Lobdell knocked a two-run shot in the bottom of the third.

The fourth inning saw Becky Corbett and Lauren Bachert trade spots with consecutive doubles for the final run for the Cardinals. 

Truman added five runs in the top of the 5th inning and another three in the 6th, pushing its lead to 13-4. The Bulldogs then closed out the game with the nine-run victory in six innings.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Six different SVSU hitters had a single hit in the contest, with Lobdell posting two RBIs and scoring a run.
  • Rousse had one RBI with her solo shot. She walked and scored a run.
  • Bachert had the final RBI with her fourth inning RBI double.
  • Danielle Hamilton, Aubree Mouthaan and Becky Corbett had the other hits for SV.
  • Annnie Hansen (0-1) got the start on the mound, allowing seven hits while giving up five runs.

Game Two - Indianapolis

The nightcap went scoreless until the bottom of the third, when the Greyhounds got a two-run home run to take a 2-0 edge.

SVSU responded in the top of the fourth with a Mouthaan sacrifice fly, which plated Madison Burgess to make the score 2-1 in Indy's favor.

The Hounds added four more runs in the bottom of the 5th and another in the 6th inning, closing out a 7-1 victory over the Cards.

Inside the Boxscore

  • The Cardinals had six hits in the second game as well, as Rousse collecting two of those with a double.
  • Mouthaan had the only RBI for SV against Indy.
  • Hamilton, Burgess, Lobdell and Breanna Dinsmoore had the other hits for SVSU. Burgess's hit was a triple.
  • Samantha Willman (0-1) took the defeat in the circle, allowing six runs on five hits.

Up Next...

Saginaw Valley continues play in Tennessee on Saturday (Feb. 18), taking on another pair of regional foes in McKendree and Bellarmine. The games are set for 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively. Both times are eastern.
