The Basics

SVSU Softball Complex - University Center, Mich.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The SVSU softball team hosted Aquinas in the team's home opener for the 2016 season. The Cardinals notched a sweep in non-conference action, running their winning streak to 11 games in posting victories of 13-1 and 5-2 at the SVSU Softball Complex.

Game One

SVSU scored four runs in the first and added two more in the second and third, respectively to jump out to an 8-0 edge.

Meredith Rousse had a two-RBI single in the first and Shelby Weeks added a two-RBI home run. The second featured an RBI groundout from Rousse and an RBI triple from Weeks. The third frame had an RBI groundout from Kennedi Thomas and another RBI triple from Weeks.

After the Saints scored a single run in the top of the fourth, the Cardinals responded with five more in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 13-1.

Aubree Mouthaan had a two-RBI double and Burgess added an RBI in a single.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Annie Hansen (3-1) pitched all five innings, allowing just a single run on two hits. She walked just one batter and struck-out two.
  • Weeks was 2-for-2 with a home run, triple, three RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Burgess was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and two runs as well.
  • Rousse had three RBIs to go along with her two hits and Danielle Hamilton added a pair of base knocks while scoring twice.
  • Mouthaan had a hit and pair of RBIs to go along with a walk and run scored.

Game Two

Weeks laced her second home run of the day in the bottom of the first, scoring Rousse for a 2-0 SVSU lead. 

Saginaw Valley added two more in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single to plate Breanna Dinsmoore and an RBI single from Mouthaan that pushed Hamilton across the dish for a 4-0 advantage.

Aquinas got on the board twice in the top of the sixth inning, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

The Cards pushed the lead out to 5-2 in the bottom half of the sixth after Burgess hit a triple to right center field and scored Evy Lobdell for the game's final score.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Burgess added another trio of hits in the nightcap with a walk and an RBI.
  • Lobdell had a pair of hits with a run scored.
  • Weeks had two RBIs on the first inning bomb.
  • Mouthaan had a hit and an RBI as well for SVSU.
  • Anna Conard (1-0) picked up her first victory of the season after working 6.0 innings in the start. She struck-out three batters, allowing just three hits and two runs.
