Softball Notches 23 Hits in Sweep of Panthers

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University State University softball team notched a sweep in GLIAC action on Saturday (Apr.25).  The team posted the wins over the Ohio Dominican Panthers in league action on Saturday morning.  The Cardinals notched victories of 10-4 and 8-2 while improving to 27-16 and 17-5 in league play.

Game One

The Cards scored two runs in the top of the first and second innings, capped by three run efforts in the third and fourth frames, respectively.  Meredith Rousse delivered a two-RBI single in the first to score Shelby Weeks and Mackenzie Rousse.  

Despite two Panther runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Cardinals kept the offense moving in the bottom of the frame with an Evy Lobdell RBI single through the right side that would eventually score Weeks and Rousse.  

A Nicole Romain three-run home run and an Amanda Kimes squeeze bunt play ended the scoring the for Cards in game one, with the visitors coming away with a 10-4 victory.  

Weeks was 3-for-4 in the opener with two runs scored, hitting three doubles while four other SVSU players had multiple hits.  Romain had two hits with the three RBIs and Meredith Rousse was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.  Lobdell and Marcy Medina each posted two hits as well, with Lobdell adding an RBI.

Sarah Appold improved to 11-7 overall on the season with the complete game victory.  

Game Two

In a game that saw the Cards score all their runs in four consecutive innings once more, SVSU got out front with a pair in the bottom of the third inning on a two-RBI Medina double that plated Weeks and Lobdell.

After the Panthers got their only two runs in the top of the fourth inning, SVSU went back to work again.  Jessica Wood's first career home run scored Rousse, improving the SVSU lead to 4-2.

Wood added a two-RBI single in the fifth inning and a Mallie Hall walk plated Madison Burgess and Medina, making the score 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth.

The final run would come via a Weeks run on a wild pitch in the sixth frame, making the score 8-2.  

That's where the score would remain for the second game, as it was halted in the seventh inning but was officially finished after six full innings of play.

Sarah Vrabel improved to 10-6 on the year after pitching all 6.0 innings, striking-out five batters while allowing five hits.

Wood was 2-for-3 in the second game with four RBIs while Medina went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs knocked-in.  Lobdell was 1-for-1 with three walks and a run scored.  

The Cardinals host Wayne State in another GLIAC doubleheader, with first pitch set for noon at the SVSU Softball Complex.
