Lady Cardinals Finish with 11-3 Victory in Day Two Split

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University softball team posted a split on its second day of competition in its spring trip to Florida, ending the day with a big 11-3 victory over Wheeling Jesuit after narrowly falling to Southern New Hampshire by a score of 4-2.

Game One | Southern New Hampshire

The Penmen got on the board right away, scoring a run in the bottom of the 1st to take a 1-0 advantage.  They would add a three spot in their half of the 4th to extend the lead to 4-0.

SVSU cut the deficit in half in the top of the 5th, using an Amanda Best home run that scored Marcy Medina to make it 4-2.

The Cardinals had one other scoring opportunity, but had a runner thrown-out at the plate and the game would finish with the 4-2 final score in favor of Southern New Hampshire.

SV managed just four hits in the game, with the big blow for the team coming in the form of Best's two-run shot.  Evy Lobdell, Jessica Wood and Marcy Medina also had hits for the Cards.

Game Two | Wheeling Jesuit

Saginaw Valley got out to a quick lead on the other Cardinals from West Virginia, holding them scoreless before pushing four runs across the plate in the bottom of the 1st for a 4-0 lead.  Lobdell had an RBI single to score Shelby Weeks, Wood drilled a double to left-center that plated Lobdell and Medina stepped to the plate and hit a two-run home run after that.

Wheeling scored a single run in its half of the 2nd, making the score 4-1.

SV responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, as walks to Mackenzie Rousse and Lobdell were followed by an RBI double from Wood and an RBI single from Medina to extend the lead out to 6-1.

Jesuit scored its final two runs in the top of the 3rd to make the score 6-3.

The home Cardinals would run out to an eight-run lead with five runs in the 3rd, using RBIs from Weeks, Lobdell, Nicole Romain, Best and Madison Burgess to make the score 11-3.

That's what the final score would show on the board, as the Cardinals improved to 6-4 on the season following the victory.

Anna Conard (2-0) got the victory for SVSU, working 1.2 innings of scoreless relief of starter Samantha Willman, who tossed 2.1 innings 

The ladies are back in action Wednesday (Mar. 4) with games against Felician (9 am) and Saint Rose (11 am).
