Lady Cards Start GLIAC Season Out Strong

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University softball team won its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchup of the season against Walsh 2-1 in 10 innings before having the second game of the doubleheader halted due to darkness. SVSU held a 6-0 lead after four complete innings when the game was postponed.

Game One

The Walsh Cavailers began the game with a leadoff double to left center. The runner advanced to third, but would not score. Walsh began the top of the second inning with another hit, but again they could not convert on the opportunity.

The fourth inning was eventful for both teams. WU would record another hit and once again failed to hit the runner home. Jordan Randall notched the first SVSU hit of the game with a single to left field. The junior infielder successfully stole second base, but collided with a Cavalier infielder trying to tag her. She collected herself and stayed in the game. Marcy Medina advanced Randall, who used all of her strength to hop to third base before Claire Coopes-Meske relieved her of her running duties. Lindsay Hayward drove Coopes-Meske in on the next at bat, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead after four innings.

The 1-0 lead would hold until the top of the seventh, when Walsh rallied to score a run to tie the game at 1-1 and forcing extra innings.

Hits in the bottom of the eigth and ninth innings by SVSU converted into no runs.

In the bottom of the 10th inning with Shelby Weeks placed at second base to begin the inning, Amanda Kimes sacrificed to advance Weeks to third base. Marcy Medina singled to left, plating Weeks to end the game. The 2-1 win improved the Cardinals to 9-3 overall on the season and 1-0 in GLIAC play.

Sarah Vrabel gave up just five hits and one run in 10 innings in the circle. The sophomore improves to 3-2 on the year.

Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader featured a hot hitting Cardinal team. Hayward led-off the second inning with a walk before Amanda Best's second homerun of the year plated both herself and Hayward, giving SV a 2-0 lead. Chelsea Adcock reached base on a single to right field. Amanda Kimes doubled, advancing Adcock to third before a Weeks single to left brought both Kimes and Adcock home. The Cardinals led 4-0 after two innings.

The hits continued for SVSU in the third inning. A Medina walk followed by a deep Best double over the center fielder's head forced Walsh to change pitchers. The Cardinals adapted to the new pitcher and didn't skip a beat. Kari Knight roped a ball down the left field line, scoring Medina and Best to give SV a 6-0 lead after four complete innings.

With the sun setting, the umpire deemed the darkness to be a problem and halted the game. The game will be completed tomorrow (March 22) afternoon at 12:00 pm. Following the completion of the Walsh doubleheader, the Cardinals will compete in their originally scheduled doubleheader against Lake Erie. First pitch will be at 1:00 pm.
