Cardinals Drop Two to No. 4 UIndy

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University softball team dropped a pair of games to No. 4 Indianapolis today at the Rebel Spring Games.  The Cardinals fell in game one, 3-1, before falling in game two by a score of 3-0.

Game One vs. Indianapolis - Box Score
Saginaw Valley took an early 1-0 lead when a sacrafice bunt by Amanda Kimes (Caledonia, Mich.) scored Mackenie Rousse (Bay City, Mich./Western HS) from third base.  Rousse lead the game off with a walk.

Indianapolis would answer in the top of the second inning with a solo homerun to centerfield.

After nearly five innings of three up and three down softball UIndy struck for two runs in the top of the seventh inning.  The Cardinals would try and rally in the bottom half of the inning when pinch hitters Kaitlyn McBride (Brampton, Ont. / St. Thomas Aquinas HS) and Jordan Randall (Clinton Twp, Mich.) each reached base, but Saginaw Valley would be unable to move either runner across the plate and would fall by a final score of 3-1.

Freshman Sarah Appold (Bay City, Mich./Valley Lutheran HS) had her best outing of the spring so far despite the loss.  She threw all seven innings allowing just three runs on five hits and striking out seven Greyhound batters on the day.

Game Two vs. Indianapolis - Box Score
Indianapolis jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning before adding another run in the bottom of the second for the 3-0 lead over the Cardinals.

Saginaw Valley would look to get something started in the fourth inning when Rousse advanced to second after getting hit by a pitch, but the SVSU threat would be stalled by the Greyhounds.

SVSU would get their only other base runner in the top of the seventh inning when Randall reached first on an error, but once against UIndy would hold the Cardinals and go on to the 3-0 victory.

Saginaw Valley will return to action Friday when they play St. Cloud State and Caldwell on day six of the Rebel Spring Games.
