Fulton Hurls Cardinals Past C.W. Post, 2-0

SALEM, Va. -  The Saginaw Valley State Univeristy softball team picked up the first ever NCAA College World Series win in school history today (May 28), defeating #25 C.W. Post 2-0 in an "elimination day" game.

After going down in order in the top of the first inning the Cardinals would get the bats going in the second, adding two runs on three hits.  Monica Gathright (Baroda, Mich.) would reach on a fielders choice and would come around to score on a Kailah Happ (Waterford, Mich.) single to the right fielder that was booted to allow the run.  Kalie Burdick (Milford, Mich.) would then line a triple down the right field line to score Happ and take early 2-0 advantage.

Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich.) (30-10) would toe the slab for the Cardinals and would pick up her 400th strikeout of the season in the third inning as she completed the one hit shutout.  Fulton would throw all seven innings, striking out 15, while allowing no runs on one hit. The one hitter captures the second best game recorded by any division II pitcher in world series play.

The Cardinals would once again threaten to break things in the fourth inning when Jillian Peterson (Freeland, Mich.) reached on an error and Marcy Medina (Valparaiso, Ind/Wheeler HS) walked.  Both runners would move up on a Gathright sacrafice bunt, but C.W. Post's Christina Berardi would get pinch hitter Lindsay Hayward (Ancaster, Ont./Ancaster HS) to ground out to end the inning.

The Cardinals improve to 41-17 overall on the season and advance to play North Georgia in a second elimination game at 5:00 PM.  With the loss C.W. Post falls to 41-16 on the season and sees its 2011 campaign come to an end.
