Cardinals Go Two-and-Out At GLIAC Tournament

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University softball team suffered two losses today (May 6) to Ferris State (2-1) and Wayne State (3-1) in the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament.

Ferris State took the early 2-0 lead over the Cardinals in game one when it scored two runs on three hits and one Saginaw Valley error in the top of the first inning. Saginaw Valley scored its only run of the contest when junior Ashley Coffin (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson HS) led off the bottom of the first with a homerun over the right field fence.

The contest remained scoreless for the next six innings, as Ferris State would defeat the Cardinals, 2-1. Senior Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich.) suffered the loss for Saginaw Valley, pitching all seven innings, making her 24-8 overall on the season.

With the loss, the Cardinals fell to 35-15 overall on the season.

In game two against Wayne State, the Cardinals fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second inning when the Warriors hit a homerun over the left field fence. Saginaw Valley tied the score in the bottom of the fifth inning on back-to-back doubles by Jessica McKeith (River Rouge, Mich.) and Coffin.

The Warriors tacked-on two runs in the top of the seventh inning when they hit a two-run homerun over the right field fence, taking the 3-1 advantage over the Cardinals.

Wayne State added one more run in the top of the seventh, taking a 4-1 lead when it scored on a passed ball by Saginaw Valley. The Cardinals were unable to score in the bottom of the seventh and the Warriors claimed the 4-1 victory.

Fulton pitched all seven innings for the Cardinals with eight strikeouts, falling to 24-9 overall on the season.

With the losses, Saginaw Valley falls to 35-16 overall on the season. The Cardinals will await the draw for the regionals to see if they will participate in next weekend's NCAA Tournament.
