Cardinals Fall to Bulldogs, 1-0, and 9-7

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University softball team fell twice to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Ferris State today (Apr. 9), 1-0 and 9-7.

Game one remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when Ferris State scored the game's lone run on a double to right center field. Sophomore Kailah Happ (Waterford, Mich. / Kettering HS) went one-for-two with a double to right center for one of the Cardinals two hits on the afternoon. Senior Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich.) suffered the loss for the Cardinals pitching all seven innings, striking out nine and allowing no free passes.

In game two Saginaw Valley took the 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs in the top of the second inning when freshman Tori Taylor (Kitchener, Ont.) singled to score Kaitlyn Kenyon (Tecumseh, Mich.). The Cardinals extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third inning when Natalie Wellman (Fairhaven, Mich. / Anchor Bay HS) led off the inning with a homerun and Kalie Burdick doubled down the left field line later in the inning to score Marcy Medina (Valparaiso, Ind. / Wheeler HS). Ferris State would battle back and score six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead over Saginaw Valley.

The Bulldogs would add three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on two hits giving them a 9-3 lead over the Cardinals. Saginaw Valley would add a run in the top of the sixth innings when senior Jillian Peterson (Freeland, Mich.) singled to score Taylor. The Cardinals tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh inning making the final score 9-7. The first run came in when freshman Lindsay Hayward (Kitchener, Ont.) scored on a wild pitch. The final two runs came across the plate when junior Ashley Coffin (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stephenson HS) singled scoring both Kalie Burdick (Milford, Mich.) and Kenyon.

Sophomore Alexa Gehrls (Caledonia, Mich.) took the loss for Saginaw Valley pitching 3.1 innings with four strikeouts, while Fulton came in for relief pitching the final 2.2 innings.

With the loss the Cardinals fall to 23-10 overall on the season, and 10-4 in the GLIAC, while Ferris State improves to 13-13 overall on the season, and 10-4 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley will be back in action on Sunday (Apr. 10) when they play Ferris State in a double header. Game start is scheduled for 12:00pm.
