Softball Sweeps Lake Superior State, 3-0 and 7-1

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University softball team took two games from the Lake Superior State University Lakers Wednesday (4/6) by scores of 3-0 and 7-1 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader.  With the win, the Cardinals move to 23-8 overall on the season and 10-2 in the GLIAC while the Lakers fall to 3-14 overall and 0-10 in conference play.

SVSU posted its first run in the second inning as junior Kalie Burdick (Milford, Mich.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring freshman Marcy Medina (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler HS).  The Cardinals would add their second run in the bottom of the fourth inning before Burdick gave Saginaw Valley its third and final run of the game on a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to push the SVSU lead to 3-0, which is where it would stand.

Senior Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich./Byron HS) toed the rubber for SVSU and picked-up her 14th win of the season after striking out 16 batters and allowing just one hit in seven innings of work.

Burdick ended the game with one hit and two RBI's while Medina added a hit and one RBI on the afternoon.

In game two, the Cardinals jumped out to an early two-run lead in the first inning and extended their lead to 3-0 in the third as junior Ashley Coffin (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson HS) posted a lead-off double and would score on a Natalie Wellman (Fairhaven, Mich./Anchor Bay HS) single up the middle.

Lake Superior State added it's only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.

SVSU posted a three-run inning in the top of the sixth and would add a final run in the seventh inning as sophomore Christina Leal (Allen Park, Mich./Woodhaven HS) doubled to left center, sending Wellman home to give the Cardinals the 7-1 victory.

Sophomore Alexa Gehrls picked up her eighth victory on the mound, striking out nine batters while going the distance.

Wellman would end the game with two hits, two runs and an RBI while Medina posted two hits, one run and an RBI as well.

Saginaw Valley will return to action this Saturday (April 9) when it hosts the Bulldogs of Ferris State University in a GLIAC doubleheader.  The first game is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
