Saginaw Valley Drops Two on Final Day

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team dropped both games today (Mar. 12), the first to Concordia St. Paul, 4-2 and Southwest Minnesota State, 2-0 in game two. SVSU finished the week at the Rebel Spring games with a 9-6 overall record.

In game one, both the Cardinals and Golden Bears managed to score a run in the first inning. Senior Ashley Jordan (Freeland, Mich.) singled to left field to score Jillian Peterson (Freeland, Mich.) for the Cardinals first run of the game.  Saginaw Valley would then take the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Peterson singled in Natalie Wellman (Fairhaven, Mich. / Anchor Bay HS).

The Golden Bears would rally in the top of the fourth inning, scoring three runs on three hits to taking a 4-2 advantage over the Cardinals. Saginaw Valley would be held scoreless over the final four innings, giving Concordia St. Paul the 4-2 victory.

Redshirt freshman Jill Kaltz (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Henry Ford II) suffered the loss for the Cardinals in the circle, pitching just three innings, while senior Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich.) pitched the final four innings for Saginaw Valley, striking out five.

In game two, neither team would be able to get on the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth inning when Southwest Minnesota State scored on a single for the 1-0 advantage. The Mustangs tacked on a final run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give them a 2-0 lead, and enough for the win over the Cardinals.

Fulton took the loss in the circle for SVSU, pitching five innings and striking out six, while sophomore Alexa Gehrls (Caledonia, Mich.) came in to pitch the final inning in relief.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday (Mar. 19) when they play their season home opener against Concordia (Mich.). The double header is scheduled to start at 12:00pm.
