Cardinals Extend Win Streak to Seven

Cardinals Extend Win Streak to Seven
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team extended its win streak to seven games today (Mar. 9) with victories over Philadelphia Sciences and Indiana (Pa.). The Cardinals are now 8-2 overall on the season.

Game 1

Saginaw Valley took a quick 4-0 lead over the Devils in the bottom of the first inning. The scoring started when senior Jillian Peterson (Freeland, Mich.) hit a double down the left field line, bringing in Natalie Wellman (Fairhaven, Mich./Anchor Bay HS). Redshirt freshman Kaitlyn Kenyon (Tecumseh, Mich.) dug in with two runners on base and brought them both around to score when she doubled to right center. The Cardinals' final run of the inning came when freshman Lindsey Heyward (Ancaster, Ont.) singled to right field to score Kenyon.

The Cardinals added one more run in the third inning off a triple by freshman Marcy Medina (Valparaiso, Ind/Wheeler HS). Saginaw Valley took a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when they tacked on two more runs. The Cardinals' first run of the inning came when Medina fouled out to right field on a SAC fly and senior Jessica McKeith (River Rouge, Mich.) was able to tag-up and score. Kenyon hit her second double of the game to bring around Peterson for Saginaw Valley to take the 7-0 advantage over the University of Sciences (Pa.). The Devils would battle back, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth, one run in the top of the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh, but it would not be enough as the Cardinals would go on to a 7-5 win.

Sophomore Alexa Gehrls (Caledonia, Mich.) picked up her third win for Saginaw Valley, pitching 5.2 innings with five strikeouts, while senior Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich.) picked-up her fourth save of the season, pitching the final two-thirds of an inning. Kenyon went three-for-three on the game with three runs batted in and scoring once for the Cardinals.

Game Two

The Cardinals went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning of game two when Peterson laid down a suicide bunt, allowing Wellman to score from third base. The lone run would be enough, as the Cardinals went on to defeat Indiana University (Pa.) 1-0 behind a strong outing from Fulton.

Fulton pitched all seven innings for Saginaw Valley, recording nine strikeouts and allowing only three hits. The Cardinals had eight hits in the contest.

Saginaw Valley will be back in action on Thursday (Mar. 10), when they take on California (Pa.) at 9:00 am and St. Cloud St. at 1:00 pm.
