#15 Saginaw Valley Improves to 9-2 with Two Wins on Day 5

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The 15th ranked Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State University got back to its winning ways today (Mar. 10), posting a 10-0 win over Northern State and 10-4 win over Southern Indiana to improve to 9-2 on the season and setting up Thursday's showdown with Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky.  SVSU defeated NKU earlier this week 2-0 and last meet up with Indianapolis in the 2009 Midwest Super Regionals, where the Greayhounds ended the Cardinals hopes of advancing to the Division II World Series.

GAME ONE
Saginaw Valley returned to the diamond after a day off ready to play, as the Wolves of Northern State helplessly watched the Cardinals put on a nine run clinic in the first inning to set the tone to the 10-0 victory.

Ashley Jordan (Freeland, Mich.) would drive in the Cardinals’ first run with an RBI single to center field that brought home Lauren Memmer (Waterford, Mich./Lakeland HS). Nicole Bigelow (Grandville, Mich.) would drive two Cardinal’s home on a double down the right field line that scored Monica Gaithright (Baroda, Mich./Lakeshore HS) and Jessica McKieth (River Rogue, Mich.). Memmer would triple her second time up in the inning, driving home Shannon McLaughlin (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet HS) and bigelow.  Jordan would cap off the inning with an RBI single that scored Billi Hoeppner (Hemlock, Mich.) to give SVSU a 9-0 advantage after the first inning

The Cardinals would add a run in the bottom of third when Ashley Coffin (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson HS) scored on a Katie Smith (Clarkston, Mich.) ground out to end SVSU’s scoring at 10-0. Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich.) got the start in the circle throwing three and two thirds of an inning, allowing one hit and striking out nine as she improves her record to 4-1 on the season.

GAME TWO
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard first in game two when Jillian Peterson (Freeland, Mich.) doubled home Jordan to put the Cardinals up 1-0 in the top of the first, but Southern Indiana would answer with two runs in the bottom half of the inning off of SVSU starting pitcher Kari Bowlby (Elkhart, Ind./Central HS).

The Cardinals would go back on top in the second inning when Jordan Stuart led off with a double down the left field line and would score on a sac fly by Shannon McLaughlin (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet HS). Allison Jaskullka (Madison Heights, Mich./Lamphere HS) would score later in the inning on a single by Angela Kaiser (Waterford, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes HS) to the pitcher to give the Cardinals the 3-2 lead.

Saginaw Valley would add to its lead in the fourth inning when Kaiser scored on a passed ball and two pitches later Hoeppner would reach on an infield single that scored Memmer from third giving SVSU a 6-2 advantage. The Screaming Eagles would get two runs back in the bottom half of the fourth.

SVSU would tack on three more runs in the fifth inning and one more in the seventh to give the Cardinals the 10-4 victory over Southern Indiana.

The Cardinals improve to 9-2 on the season and will play Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky on Thursday (Mar. 11) as they continue their spring trip to the Rebel Spring.
