INDIANAPOLIS - The Saginaw Valley State
University softball team fresh off its 2009 Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship
was selected by the by the NCAA Division II Softball Committee
along with 63 other teams to participate in the 2009 NCAA Division
II Softball Regional Championships.
Four teams will participate at each of 16 regional sites in
double-elimination tournaments. The Cardinals will host the Midwest
2 Region the will feature; Ferris State, Lewis and Northern
Kentucky. The regional competition will be held May 8-10. This
marks the first time in school history that Saginaw Valley State
University has been selected to host a NCAA Regional for
softball.
Winners of the two sub-regionals will advance to the super
regionals on May 15-16. Host school will be determined by the
NCAA.
The finals will be held May 21-25 in Salem, Virginia, at the James
I. Moyer Sports Complex.
In 2008 the Cardinals were also selected as one of the eight teams
to compete in the Midwest Regional, falling in their first two
games in Edwardsville, Ill.
Saginaw Valley State University finished the 2009 regular season
with a 35-9 record overall and 18-4 in the GLIAC. This past weekend
the Cardinals sweep through the GLIAC Tournament in four games to
capture back-to-back titles for the first time since 1990 when the
Cardinals won their third straight conference championship.
