Grob Second in Decathlon After Record Opening Day

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University senior multi-event student-athlete Tyler Grob had a big opening day at the 2014 Outdoor Track & Field National Championships at Grand Valley State University.

Grob posted a first day total of 3,949 points and sits 142 points behind two-time defending national champion J. Patrick Smith of Chico State.  The 3,949 first day point total is a new personal record for Grob on the first day of outdoor competition, besting his previous PR by 300 points.

The opening event of the meet was the decathlon 100 meter dash, where Grob notched 852 points after a 5th place finish with a time of 11.04 seconds.

He scored 762 points in the second event, jumping to a distance of 6.78 meters in the long jump to finish 9th.

The shot put portion of the decathlon was next and Grob racked-up 755 points and a 1st place finish with a toss of 14.43 meters.

Tyler added another 755 points with a 5th place finish in the high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 1.95 meters.

The group rounded-out the day with the 400 meter run, where he placed 8th with a time of 49.85 seconds to claim 822 points.

The second day of the decathlon begins Friday (May 23) at 9:30 am with the 110 meter hurdles.  The group will then commence with the Discus Throw, Pole Vault, Javelin Throw and 1,500 meter run to finish the competition.

Grob is one of three student-athletes representing SVSU at this year's national championships. Emerald Joiner will be competing in the shot put on Saturday at 5:05 pm and Anna Fochesato will be participating in the high jump on Saturday at 5:30 pm.
