GENEVA, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track & field teams competed in the second day of the 2014 GLIAC Outdoor Championships.  Along with several other solid performances, the highlight of the day was the performance of SVSU senior Tyler Grob.

Men

Leading the men's decathlon after day one, Tyler Grob sealed his defense of the title in the event.  He posted first place finishes in the 110 meter hurdles (15.73) and 1,500 meter run (4:37.21), as well as breaking his own GLIAC record in the decathlon pole vault with a height of 4.90 meters.  Grob had a mark of 4.80 meters in the championships last year.  He added a runner-up finish in the discus throw, posting a distance of 35.69 meters.  He finished with a total of 6,940 points.  He finished 325 points ahead of Ashland's Tyler Chancellor and 84 points shy of his GLIAC record of 7,024 he set last year.  The finish provisionally qualifies him for nationals.

Andrew Middleton qualified for the finals in the 800 meter run, finishing fifth in the 800 meter run in the prelims.

D'Omar Boyden will also participate in the finals, as he had a time of 14.90 in the 110 meter hurdles.

Gareth Gose had a fifth place showing in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:22.99.  That time was good enough to provisionally qualify him for the NCAA Division II Championships.

Women

The women had a pair of student-athletes qualify for the 400 meter dash finals.  Diamond Taylor crossed the line in a time of 56.91 to finish third and teammate Ola Hendler was eighth with a 58.91 second showing.

In the 1,500 meter run, Chantelle Fondren finished in third place with a time of 4:34.67.  

The 4 x 100 meter relay team of Taylor, Kimberly Balls, Domonique Smith and Shavonne Roberson also ended in third place, finishing with a time of 47.51 seconds.

Emerald Joiner had a fifth place provisional showing in the shot put with a distance of 14.76 meters and Sidney Bischer was sixth in the women's heptathlon with a 3,923 point total.

Christina Micale finished ninth in the steeplechase with a time of 11:08.82.  The time was an NCAA Provisional mark for her.

The teams return to action Friday (May 2), as the events begin at 10:30 am with the men's discus throw.
