MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team opened the season with an impressive win over Northern Michigan University on the road Sunday in Marquette, Mich.

The Cardinals got the scoring started early and added on throughout while limiting the Wildcats to just four shots on net the entire way. The win starts the season for SVSU at 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

"NMU is always a really difficult place to play, so keeping a clean sheet and winning by four goals will help us build confidence going into next weekend," SVSU Head Coach Louis Barrow said.

Danny Barlow broke through for the Cardinals in the 15th minute on an assist with Brady Walker, scoring his first goal for his new team after transferring to SVSU in the offseason from the University of Denver. Kairo Coore netted his first of two goals on the day on a penalty kick just after halftime to make it 2-0.

The Cardinals stretched their lead to 3-0 with a goal from Ben Adamson in the 53rd minutes, while Coore put the game away with his second of the day in the 71st minute on an assist from Walker.

Mason Maziasz got the start in net for SVSU, making four saves and earning the shutout. SVSU outshot NMU 17-8 and took six corners kicks to four from the Wildcats.

The Cardinals continue GLIAC competition with another road contest against defending conference champion the University of Wisconsin Parkside at 1 pm next Sunday in Kenosha, Wis.
