MARQUETTE, Mich.. - The Cardinal men's soccer program headed north into the upper peninsula for the first time to take on a newcomer to the GLIAC, the Northern Michigan University Wildcats. After a first half goal to get an early lead, the SVSU defense held strong in the second period and sealed the shutout victory in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. 

SVSU senior Jordan Kalk got the Cardinals out to a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period. He dribbled through the Wildcat defense, putting the ball past the goalkeeper for the score. Matt Wilson had the assist on the play, setting Kalk up for the goal.

That single goal edge would hold until halftime, as SVSU posted nine first half shots while Northern Michigan had eight.

Both squads would put the pressure on in the second period, as both the Cardinals and Wildcats put six shots on goal in the final 45 minutes of play. The Cardinal defense and goalkeeper Connor Keane would hold strong, posting four saves in the final five minutes of play, maintaining the clean sheet and posting their third shutout of the season.

• Kalk's goal was his fourth of the season for the Cardinals and his second game-winning tally.
• Wilson now has five assists on the 2016 campaign, which still leads the GLIAC. He leads in points (19) and goals (7) as well.
• Saginaw Valley posted 21 shots total in the match, just four short of their season-high. The 10 shots on goal mark a high for the season.
• Jordan Kalk and Troy Watson each had a match-high four shots, while Kalk, Liam Reilly and Roderic Green all put a pair of shots on goal.
• Keane had a career-high six saves while earning his seventh victory and third shutout.

The Cardinals are off until Wednesday (Oct. 5), when SVSU makes-up a postponed match against the Tiffin University Dragons. The contest, originally set for this past Wednesday, will feature a 2:30 p.m. first kick at Braddock Field.
