Second-ranked Cardinals defeat Walsh in overtime, 4-3

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The nationally second-ranked Saginaw Valley State men's soccer team remained unbeaten after a 4-3 overtime road victory at Walsh on Friday (9/19) night.

The game was back-and-forth all night long, as the Cardinals had an answer for every Walsh goal.  The Cavaliers got on the board first, as Alexandre Bouillennec gave up his first goal of the 2014 season just two minutes into the contest.  SVSU would answer at the 26:24 mark of the first half, when sophomore Jordan Kalk received a pass from Aleksander Isaevski and found the back of the net.  The teams would head into the half with the scored tied, 1-1.

The second half got underway in similar fashion, as the Cavaliers took a 2-1 lead just seven minutes in.  The Cardinals would answer about ten minutes later as senior Craig Neal scored his second goal of the season on a penalty kick.  Walsh would then regain the lead at the 74:54 mark, 3-2.  But the Cardinals would keep battling as they looked for the equalizer.  With only 9:30 remaining in the game, freshman Griffin Parks would score his first goal of the night to tie the game.  Senior Philip Strachan had the assist on the goal.  SVSU got two more shots on goal but were denied both times, and the teams would head to overtime.

The overtime session was short, as Parks would receive a pass up the middle of the field from Kalk and was able to put a shot past the Walsh goalkeeper for the win.  Parks finished the night with two goals, including the game winner.  Kalk ended the night with one goal and one assist.

"Hats off to our boys for never quitting and battling back tonight and a great game winner from Griffin who has really stepped up these last two weeks," said SVSU head coach Cale Wassermann.  "I give Walsh full credit for coming out and playing the way they did, they had a great night as a team and some top individual performances from #11 and their goalkeeper.  We learned some important things about ourselves tonight and look to improve on a lot as we go forward."

The win would keep the Cardinals unbeaten record in-tact as they improve to 4-0-1 and 1-0-1 in GLIAC play.  The Cavaliers fall to 3-1-0 and 1-1-0 in the GLIAC.

The Cardinals return to action on Sunday (9/21) against Malone University at 1 pm.  The Pioneers are 1-3-0 and 0-2-0 in the GLIAC.
