Spring Spotlight - SVSU Men's Golf

Spring Spotlight - SVSU Men's Golf

The Cardinal Men's Golf Team competed in six tournaments this past fall, racking-up four top-five finishes in those tournaments. The best finish for Saginaw Valley came at the 2019 GLIAC North Invitational, where the team finished third and junior Gunnar Stein collected his second career victory at the Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Michigan. Stein finished the tournament as the only player under par, firing rounds of 72-69.

From Men's Golf Head Coach Joe Vogl...

"After the fall season, we found out that in order to compete for a spot in the NCAA postseason we would need a couple of guys around or below par each round. Along with that, we would have to improve our team scoring by seven or eight shots per round. A tall order, but with the work put in by our guys in January and February in the Eastland Golf Center, coupled with the work put in on the spring trip, we thought we had a chance. It was unfortunate that the spring season was called-off about 12 hours before we were set to leave for our first spring tournament. We felt pretty good about making a run this spring but, unfortunately, we will never know!"

Alex is set to graduate in May 2020 with his degree and plan on working in the golf industry after graduation. His favorite spot on campus is the Eastland Golf Center and his favorite road trip while competing for Saginaw Valley was the team's trip to the Upper Peninsula to compete in the Northern Michigan Invitational. His best memory is when he holed-out from 150 yards at the HawksHead Golf Links.

Mitch Hughes

Major - Mechanical Engineering

Mitch is set to graduate in May 2020 with his degree. He has secured a full-time engineering position at B & P Littleford in Saginaw once he is finished with school. His favorite spot on campus at SVSU is the walking trail that goes behind the Health and Human Services building. Mitch's favorite memory while competing for the Cardinals was his round at the 2019 GLIAC North Invitational where he started with three straight birdies and had seven total in the round. His favorite road trip was the 2020 spring break, where he enjoyed the great weather and the teams got to cheer on Coach Vogl as he made his final walk up 18 for the team spring trips. That trip was capped-off with the opportunity to watch the professionals at the Bay Hill Invitational.

Jordan Weaver

Hometown - Cadillac, Michigan

Major - Accounting

Jordan graduated this past December and currently works in an accounting role at a boat manufacturer in Cadillac. His favorite spot on campus is the Eastland Golf Center. Jordan is a huge Philadelphia sports fan and he follows all of those teams very closely. Weaver enjoyed all of the team's spring break trips to Florida as his favorite road trips and his best memory while competing for the Cardinals was when he carded a career-best 70 in the first round of the SVSU Fall Invitational in 2018. What made the day even more special is he had a lot of family there to witness the round.
