Tom Lavoie is entering his second season as an assistant on Frankie Smith's staff after 25 years of high school basketball coaching experience.  As Beal City High School's head coach from 1986 to 2002, Lavoie led his teams to back-to-back Class D Runner-up finishes in the 1987-88 and 1988-89 seasons.  He also led a team to the State Quarterfinals during the 1990-91 season, as well as five conference championships.  Prior to that, Lavoie coached for five seasons at Fenton High School and Immaculate Conception High School in Illinois.  Lavoie has 271 career varsity coaching victories, and was selected to coach in the 1989 Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan All Star Game, and has received numerous coaching honors.  He recently retired from his position as a teacher and varsity girls basketball coach at Beal City High School and has coached softball, baseball and football, as well as being an athletic director at the high school level.

Lavoie prepped at Alpena High School and played for BCAM Hall of Fame coach Irv Dieterle.  He graduated from Central Michigan University with a bachelor of science degree in Business Administration and Business Education with a minor in Physical Education.  Lavoie also earned a master's degree in Athletic Administration from CMU.  He has two daughters: Jackie (24) and Danielle (23).
