Three Cardinal Men’s Basketball Players Earn All-GLIAC Awards

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced the 2022-23 men's basketball award winners on Friday afternoon.

Tre Garrett was named Second-Team All-GLIAC and earned a spot on the All-Defensive team. Freddie McIntosh joined Garrett on the Second-Team All-GLIAC squad while Kevonne Taylor was named All-Defensive.

Garrett finished the regular season second in scoring (15 points per game) on the SVSU men's basketball team. He led the team in rebounds with 169 and steals with 58. Both of those numbers were top-five in the GLIAC with the steals being second and the rebounds tied for fourth.

"We are very happy for Tre to be recognized as both an All-GLIAC and All-Defensive guard," said men's basketball head coach Randy Baruth. "His motor and passion are second to none. He was always given the assignment of guarding the opposing team's best perimeter player and still averaged 15 ppg, while being amongst the top of the league in rebounds and steals. This is a great award for a young man who has put in an incredible amount of work to keep growing his game, and we're excited to see him grow more into a senior leader."

McIntosh led the Cardinals in scoring with 16 points per game. That mark is eighth in the GLIAC. He finished the season with 100 rebounds, 91 assists, and 31 steals. McIntosh set a new career-high in points with 29 against Lake Superior State on February 9.

"Freddie is very deserving of being named All-GLIAC and we are happy for him to be recognized as such," stated Baruth. "Freddie carried the scoring load for us and made a ton of big plays all season. He is the most rock-solid, consistent competitor I have been around in a long time. He represents everything we want to be about, and with Tre, you won't find two young men hungrier than them. We are looking forward to him continuing to develop into his junior season. "

Taylor led the league with 57 blocks to earn his place on the All-Defensive team. The redshirt freshman from Detroit finished this debut season with 111 rebounds, 5.9 points per game, and 2.1 blocks per game average.

"Our staff is very excited for Kevonne to be voted All-Defensive team and think he's more than deserving as he led the GLIAC and Midwest Region in blocks, and finished 8th in the country in total blocks, all while only a freshman," Baruth lauded. "He has emerged as a dominant young man in our program; someone who has his teammates always wanting him on the floor. With the rate of growth that Kevonne has shown, he has a chance to become one of SVSU's greatest big men."
