KENOSHA, Wis. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team earned a road Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win, topping the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday in Kenosha, Wis.
The Cardinals and Rangers went back and forth all game, but SVSU was able to make big shots down the stretch to escape with a 77-73 win. The victory moves SVSU to 12-6 overall and 6-4 in the GLIAC.
How it Happened:
- Jarno Pomstra hit a layup with 13:15 remaining in the first half to give SVSU a narrow 13-12 lead.
- The Rangers took a five-point lead with a layup from Jamir Simpson with under 3 minutes remaining before the break.
- After Darnell Hoskins Jr. hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 33-31, Parkside answered right back with a three to lead by five points at the half.
- The Cardinals tied the game quickly to start the second half after a Tyrik Singh layup.
- Vinson Sigmon Jr. push the Rangers in front by six with a 3-pointer just over five minutes into the second half.
- Down five, Hoskins Jr. was fouled take a three, and hit all three free throws, while Freddie McIntosh tied the game at 64-64 with a layup with five minutes to play.
- James Toohey hit three free throws with two minutes remaining to extend the SVSU lead to four.
- Hoskins Jr. hit a layup and made a pair of free throws down the stretch to secure the win for the Cardinals.
Inside the Box Score:
- Hoskins Jr., the two-time reigning GLIAC Player of the Week, led the Cardinals with 24 points, including three 3-pointers. He was 7-of-7 at the line.
- Freddie McIntosh added 11 points and three assists, while James Toohey finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
- Tre Garrett chipped in with nine points and three steals off the bench.
- The Cardinals shot 28-of-54 from the field, 5-of-17 from deep, and 16-of-21 from the line. SVSU outrebounded Parkside 31-26
- Vinson Sigmon Jr. led the Rangers with 21 points, including five 3-pointers.
