Cardinal rally falls short in 65-62 loss to Huskies

HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech put together a 15-2 run late in a close contest to top the Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team and sweep the two-game Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference weekend series Saturday in Houghton, Mich.

The Cardinals led 47-42 with 12 minutes to play in the second half, but MTU held SVSU to just two points for the next seven minutes to build a 10-point advantage. The Cardinals rallied, cutting the deficit to one point on a Myles Belyeu jumper with 1:34 left. 

SVSU was unable to pull in front and fell to the Huskies 65-62. The loss drops the Cardinals to 2-9 overall and 2-9 in the GLIAC.

Darnell Hoskins Jr. led the Cardinals with 20 points, including four 3-pointers, while Belyeu added 15 points and five rebounds. Delano Smith narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

SVSU shot 23-of-60 from the field, 7-of-18 from deep, and 9-of-10 at the line, recording nine assists, nine steals, and 11 turnovers. 

Owen White recorded a team-high 18 points for the Huskies (8-3, 6-3 GLIAC), adding 10 rebounds for a double-double. 

The Cardinals return home to welcome Ferris State University for two games starting at 5 pm Friday at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.
