Ashland edges SVSU men in OT 71-67

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Ashland University hit a game-tying tip in as time expired to take the Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team to overtime in the first of a two-game weekend series Friday at the James E. O'Neill Arena.

The Eagles took control in the extra frame and held off the Cardinals 71-67. The loss drops SVSU to 1-4 overall and 1-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Following a missed free throw with 12 seconds remaining in regulation, Ashland gathered an offensive rebound, setting up a missed jump shot from Brandon Haraway. The Eagles got a tip in from Aaron Thompson as the clock hit all zeros to tie the score at 60-60 and force overtime.

The Eagles did not trail in the overtime period as two 3-pointers midway through gave Ashland control.

Delano Smith got the start for the Cardinals and led the team in scoring. He finished with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while adding 10 rebounds for a double-double. Darnell Hoskins Jr. added 19 points, while Zane Foster narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

The Cardinals shot 23-of-59 from the field, 5-of-25 from deep and 16-of-23 from the line. SVSU totaled eight assists, six steals, five blocks and 16 turnovers, while outrebounding the Eagles 35-29.

Hunter Shedenhelm led Ashland with 23 points, including six 3-pointers. Thompson finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

The Cardinals and Eagles close the weekend series with game two at 3 pm Saturday at the James E. O'Neill Arena.
