SVSU Men fall at Northwood, 71-58

MIDLAND -- Playing in the final contest of the 2018-19 season, the SVSU Men's Basketball team faced Northwood University on the road Thursday night. The Timberwolves, fighting for a GLIAC postseason berth, would come out and defeat the Cardinals by a final score of 71-58 at NU's Riepma Arena.

The first half began all Northwood, as the Timberwolves built an 11-point lead and led by eight points (27-19) with just 2:07 remaining in the first half.

Saginaw Valley chipped-away at that lead, however, using consecutive layups from Sebastiano Lamonato and a three-pointer from Myles Belyeu to make the score 27-26 in NU's favor.

Darnell Hoskins Jr., Lamonato and Belyeu all led the way through the opening 20 minutes with seven points. Belyeu had a game-high seven rebounds in the first half as well. 

A Belyeu layup with 15:45 to play knotted the score at 33-33 but the T-Wolves would work their way back out to a double digit lead at 51-40 with 7:10 showing on the clock. 

The lead would reach as much as 14 points and Northwood would end up finishing-off for the 13-point victory, 71-58. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Belyeu finished with a double-double for the Cardinals, recording a team-high 16 points and game-best 12 rebounds. He was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" while adding five assists and a steal as well.
  • Lamonato had 11 points with seven boards.
  • Hoskins netted 13 points, adding three assists, three steals and a rebound.
  • The rebounding battle was tied 37-37 while NU posted a 40-32 edge in the paint

SVSU will miss out on the 2019 GLIAC Tournament and look forward to next season, having won two of the final three games of the 2018-19 campaign. The Cardinals return their full roster for the 2019-20 season.
