Cardinals Come Up Big in Second Half to Defeat No. 25 Ferris State, 74-72

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The SVSU men's basketball team defeated Ferris State University on Saturday (Jan. 30) afternoon in a matchup between the top two teams in the GLIAC. After trailing 28-24 at the half, SVSU erupted for a 50-44 edge in the second frame and closed out for the two-point victory, 74-72. 

After running out to a 4-0 lead, the Cardinals held their largest lead of the game at the 13:04 mark when Garrett Hall made a layup to make the score 13-5. 

Ferris re-gained the lead at the nine minute mark (16-15) and, after a brief SVSU lead, would hold an eight-point edge with 1:42 to play in the half after a three-pointer from Noah King. The home team carried the 28-24 lead into the halftime break. 

A pair of Damon Bozeman free throws tied the game up at 28-28 at the 18:12 marker of the second half and a C.J. Turnage dunk gave the visitors the 30-28 lead with 17:53 to play. 

The Bulldogs got the lead back and held it until a pair of Bozeman freebies made the score 46-45 in SVSU's favor with 12:09 showing on the clock. 

A Turnage jumper at the 1:45 mark made the score 68-62 in SVSU's favor, but Ferris cut the lead to 69-68 after a three-pointer from Drew Cushingberry.

Solid foul shooting down the stretch allowed the Cardinals to maintain the lead, as the visitors pulled ahead by the 74-72 score after a Hall freebie with three seconds to play and that would be the final score.

Inside the Boxscore 

  • Turnage had a game-high 24 points with seven rebounds, two assists and a block. 
  • Bozeman added 15 points and seven boards. 
  • Kellen Smith chipped-in with eight rebounds, five assists and five points. 
  • Hall had nine points, four rebounds and an assist while Devin Dixon posted eight points and six boards. 
  • SVSU out-rebounded the Bulldogs narrowly, 48-47, and the Cardinal bench ourscored the Bulldogs, 19-17. 

Meijer "Player of the Game"

Turnage was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" after his 24 points, seven boards, two assists and one block.

Up Next for SVSU

Saginaw Valley travels to Hillsdale College for a Monday (Feb. 1) matchup with the Chargers and an 8:00 p.m. tip-off. The Chargers are coming off a 76-63 victory at Grand Valley Saturday afternoon.
