MIDLAND, Mich. - The SVSU men's basketball team traveled to Northwood University for a GLIAC matchup this Saturday. Following their victory over the No. 19 LSSU Lakers on Thursday (Jan. 14), the Cardinals fell to the Timberwolves 94-84 in the GLIAC North Division contest.

The Cardinals kept pace with Northwood in the opening minutes of the game and took their largest lead, 15-12 at the 15 minute mark. The Timberwolves pulled ahead by 10 points by the end of the half, heading into the break leading 43-33.

In the beginning of the second half, SVSU was able to gain ground and cut Northwood's lead to five points after a pair of free throws from C.J. Turnage at the 16:56 minute mark. That was the closest the score would get for the rest of the game.

With 8:55 left on the clock, the Timberwolves had run the lead up to 18 points, 71-53.

SV responded with nine unanswered points, cutting the lead to 71-62 after a three-pointer from Caleb Davis with 6:34 left in the game.

Sterling Johnson made a buzzer beating layup for the Cardinals, making the final score 94-84 in Northwood's favor.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Davis posted a career-high of 27 points for the Cardinals, matching his season high of five triples and setting a season-high with a perfect 8-of-8in free throws. Davis also grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
  • Damon Bozeman contributed 16 points, going 6-of-14 shooting. Bozeman grabbed six rebounds and a pair of steals.
  • Garrett Hall posted nine points and five rebounds for SV. 
  • Kellen Smith led the Cardinals with six assists, also recording five points and four rebounds. He surpassed the 448 career assist mark, becoming the all-time leader in the category in program history.
  • Turnage added eight points, four assists and two steals.
  • Northwood shot 53.6% (30-56) from the floor, while the Cardinals were 41.7% (25-60).
  • The Timberwolves out-rebounded Saginaw Valley 42-30 and had 34 points in the paint compared to SV's 26.
  • SVSU remains in sole possession of first place in the GLIAC following a Lake Superior State loss at Hillsdale.
  • Maurice Jones led Northwood with 39 points, six assists and five boards.

Meijer "Player of the Game"

Davis was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" after posting his career-high of 27 points in the game. He was 7-of-12 from the field and 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, adding eight free throws. 

Up Next for SVSU

Next week, Saginaw Valley travels to the Upper Peninsula for two away GLIAC North Division matchups. The Cardinals square-off against Northern Michigan (4-9, 2-7 GLIAC) in Marquette on Thursday (Jan. 21) for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off. Northern is coming off a 96-79 defeat at Ferris State on Saturday (Jan. 16). On Saturday (Jan. 23) SV faces Michigan Tech at 3:00 p.m.
