Men's Basketball Bounces Back For Win at Wayne State, 77-69

Detroit, Mich. - The SVSU men's basketball team defeated Wayne State in a GLIAC  contest and stayed tied atop the North Division standings in the effort.

The Warriors pulled ahead in the opening minutes of the game, scoring 13 points to Saginaw Valley's five by the 15:47 mark. The Cardinals kept within eight points of Wayne until they were able to reduce the lead to two after a jump shot from C.J. Turnage with 9:21 left in the half. This brought the score to 22-20.

Saginaw Valley took the lead at 27-26 for the first time in the game after Garrett Hall made a layup with 3:17 left on the clock. The Cardinals kept the lead for the rest of the half, extending it to a period high of five at the 1:53 minute mark after a three pointer from Mitchell Baenziger and then again with 30 seconds left after Garrett Hall tipped it in, 35-30. The Warriors took the lead down to three after two free throws from Ronald Booth, leaving the score 35-32 at the half.

The Cardinals continued to gain momentum after halftime and extended their lead further. Damon Bozeman made a consecutive layup and free throw to give Saginaw Valley their largest lead yet and bring the score to 40-32 with two minutes into the half.

Wayne State gained ground and reduced the Cardinals' lead to one point with 13:10 left on the clock. Saginaw came back to score seven unanswered points, taking their lead back up to eight within a minute and a half.

The Warriors were brought within one point of the Cardinals again after Booth scored twice from the free throw line again with 5:09 showing on the clock. SV responded again scoring seven points unanswered to bring their lead up to eight with 1:02 left. Bozeman sunk eight free throws in the last minute to help bring the final score to 77-69.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Bozeman matched his season high and led the game with 22 points. Bozeman also led in steals, posting a season high of four, as well as seven rebounds.
  • Turnage led the Cardinals with a season high five assists, also contributing 11 points and six rebounds. He surpassed the 1,000-point mark in the victory.
  • Hall posted 10 points and grabbed a season high 11 rebounds, leading the game.
  • Caleb Davis and Baenziger each contributed eight points for the Cardinals.
  • SVSU shot 46.0% (23-50) from the floor compared to Wayne shooting 36.1% (22-61).
  • The Cardinals grabbed 21 points from the bench, while the Warriors received six.
  • Michael Lewis led the Warriors, posting 18 points, going six-of-fifteen in shooting.

Bozeman earned Meijer "Playe of the Game" honors after his 22 point and seven rebound performance. He added four steals while connecting on 14-of-15 free throws.

Saginaw Valley hosts Grace Bible on Monday (Jan. 11) at 7:00 pm and Lake Superior on Thursday (Jan. 14) at 8:00 pm. Grace Bible is 12-7 overall. Lake Superior is 11-2 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC. The Lakers are coming off a 76-63 victory at Tiffin on Saturday afternoon.
