Men's Basketball Claims Victory Over St. Joe's at the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge

LOUISVILLE, KY - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team traveled to compete in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky this Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 14 & 15). On Saturday's game against Bellarmine, the Cardinals kept the lead for almost the entire game after only being tied briefly in the first two minutes.

The Pumas came close to tying it up again after eight minutes of play when Davone Daniels made a jump shot to take the score to 14-13.  C.J. Turnage and Garrett Hall responded by both making back to back shots to widen the lead to 22-15. The Cardinals made four blocks in the first half; two from Devin Dixon and one each from Caleb Davis and Kellen Smith.

Sterling Johnson just barely beat the buzzer, sinking a three-pointer with one second left in the first half, leaving the score 42-24 in the first half.

In the second half, Saginaw Valley continued to lead, scoring 46 points. 11 of them came from C.J. Turnage and 10 from Wade Gelhaus. The Cardinals were able to grap 23 rebounds in comparison with St. Joe's 16 during the last half of the game. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Turnage led the Cardinals offensively, earning 19 points total and going 7-of-13 in shooting. 
  • Damon Bozeman tacked in 17 points as well, making three of his seven three point attempts.
  • Wade Gelhaus led the team with ten rebounds and posted 11 points for the Cardinals.
  • Garrett Hall and Vincent Adams posted 9 and 8 points, respectively.
  • SVSU shot 47.6% (30-63) from the floor and St. Joe's made 34.4% (21-61) of their shots. 
  • The Cardinals hit on 78.6% (22-28) of their free throws  while the Pumas was 13-22 (59.1%) from three.
  • Davone Daniels led the Pumas and tied Turnage in points and shooting percentage.
