DAYTON, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team traveled to play Division-I opponent the University of Dayton on Saturday (Nov. 7) afternoon in an exhibition contest at the University of Dayton Arena. The host Flyers built a 14-point halftime advantage with the score 48-34 and would outscore the Cardinals by a 48-35 margin in the second half, closing out for a 96-69 win.

SVSU kept the score to within single digits as late as the 7:11 marker of the opening half when Caleb Davis hit a three pointer to make the score 30-21. Dayton extended the lead from there and carried a 48-34 lead into the half.

The Cardinals got 10 first half points from C.J. Turnage and another seven from Caleb Davis. Dayton posted a 25-14 edge in rebounds for the opening 20 minutes of play. 

The Flyers would continue to lead and close out for the 96-69 victory after the second half of play. SVSU got another eight points from Turnage in the second period and six from Garrett Hall on a pair of three-pointers. Damon Bozeman chipped-in with five points in the second frame. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Turnage led the Cardinals offensively, as he connected on 9-of-16 shooting for a game-high 18 points. 
  • Garrett Hall reached double figures as well for SVSU, connecting on a trio of three-pointers while adding a pair of free throws for 11 points. He added five rebounds in the game.
  • Damon Bozeman chipped-in with eight points in his 24 minutes off the bench while Caleb Davis and Mike Wells each added seven points.
  • Kellen Smith led the team with six rebounds and dished-out three assists for the visitors. 
  • Dayton shot 51.5% (35-68) from the floor in the contest while SVSU hit on 46.3% (25-54) of its shots. 
  • The Cardinals hit on 41.2% (7-17) of their shots from beyond the arc while Dayton was 5-of-14 (35.7%) from three.
  • The Flyers posted an overall 44-28 advantage in rebounds and scored 30 points off 18 Cardinal turnovers. 
  • Steve McElvene led the Flyers with 15 points and seven boards.

Saginaw Valley opens its 2015-16 regular season on the road in the annual GLIAC / GLVC Challenge, which takes place on November 14-15. The Cardinals take on St. Joseph's on the 14th at 6:00 p.m. eastern time before taking on host and preseason #4 ranked Bellarmine the 15th at 8:30 p.m.
