DETROIT, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team dropped a road contest against GLIAC-leading Wayne State University today (Jan. 12), 90-56. The Cardinals fall to 6-6 and 4-5 in the GLIAC with the loss, while the Warriors improve to 10-2 overall and a perfect 9-0 atop the conference standings.

The Cardinals and Warriors squared off in a physical matchup featuring a pressing Wayne State defensive attack. Personal fouls were plentiful as both teams entered the bonus less than ten minutes into the contest.

Saginaw Valley took a brief 8-7 advantage after Meijer 'Player of the Game' Chris Webb (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) connected for a triple at the 13:21 mark of the first half.

However, the Warriors connected from long range on four consecutive possessions to open things up and take a 28-18 lead with 6:28 to play until halftime.

The Cardinals were unable to cool off the WSU shooters as SVSU trailed 38-25 after 20 minutes of action. Saginaw Valley fired just 30.4 percent from the field, while allowing Wayne State to shoot 52 percent.

The second half was all Wayne State as Saginaw Valley could not find their rhythm on either end of the floor. The Warriors picked up the 90-56 victory to remain unbeaten in the conference.

Chris Webb finished with a team-high 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting, 3-of-4 from the arc and 4-for-4 from the foul line. Brett Beland (Menominee, Mich.) followed with 11 points, while Rob Clark (Saginaw, Mich.) chipped in with ten rebounds. 

SVSU was plagued this afternoon by turnovers and missed shots. The Warriors outscored the Cardinals 52-31 in the second half and only turned the ball over once, compared to 12 turnovers for SVSU. For the game, Wayne State converted 14 Cardinal turnovers into 22 points.

Saginaw Valley will attempt to get back on track this Thursday (Jan. 17) when they visit Northern Michigan University for a 5:30 PM start.
