Webb's 31 Points Not Enough as Cardinals Fall at Malone, 85-69

CANTON, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team fell to Malone University today in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest by a score of 85-69.

Meijer "Player of the Game," Chris Webb (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill HS) helped spark an 11-2 run as the Cardinals took a 22-21 lead over the Pioneers with 6:58 left to play in the first half.

Webb led the Cardinals in the first half, scoring 15 of his career-high 31 points in the opening half.  SVSU entered the locker room trailing the Pioneers 34-31.

Saginaw Valley fired 12-of-28 (43 percent) from the floor in the first half and 3-of-5 (60 percent) from behind the three-point line.

A three-point basket with just under two minutes to play by Sterling Johnson (Detroit, Mich./De La Salle HS) cut the Malone advantage to single digits for the first time since the opening minutes of the second half.  The Cardinals were unable to get any closer, as the Pioneers went on to the 85-69 victory.

The Cardinals finished the game 28-of-59 (47 percent) from the floor and 7-of-14 (50 percent) from behind the three-point line.  The big discrepancy in the contest came at the free-throw line where Malone (23-of-27) outshot the Cardinals (6-of-8) for the game.

Webb led the Cardinals with 31 points, while Brett Beland (Menominee, Mich.) added 13 points on the afternoon.

With the loss the Cardinals fall to 4-3 overall on the season and 2-2 in the GLIAC, while Malone improves to 6-2 on the season and 4-1 in the conference.
