HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team fell to Michigan Tech University tonight (Feb. 23), 85-58. The loss drops the Cardinals to 10-15 overall and 6-12 in the GLIAC, while the Huskies improve to 14-11 on the season and 12-6 in the conference.

Saginaw Valley was led by Meijer "Player of the Game" George Goodman (Saginaw, Mich./Buena Vista HS) who posted 18 points in the contest including 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the three-point line and 4-for-4 from the foul line.

The Cardinals fell behind early before the nation's second-best free throw shooter Brett Beland (Menominee, Mich.) knocked down two free throws to tie the contest at 10-10 with 15:32 left in the first half. Beland recorded 11 points including 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.

Michigan Tech would gain momentum from there and run their lead to as much as 21 in the first half.

SVSU's Chris Webb (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill HS) got to the charity stripe and connected on a pair of shots to bring the Cardinals within 40-27 with one minute to go until halftime. Webb finished the contest with ten points.

Michigan Tech took a 42-27 lead over Saginaw Valley into halftime.

The Huskies would control the tempo for much of the second half. Rob Clark (Saginaw, Mich.) converted a three-point play after getting fouled on a tough bucket inside the paint to make the score 59-36 with 11:26 remaining in the contest. Clark finished the contest with nine points.

Saginaw Valley would eventually fall to Michigan Tech by a final score of 85-58.

The Cardinals fired 35.7 percent from the field including 14-for-15 from the free throw stripe.

Saginaw Valley will attempt to finish the season on a high note as they will travel to Northern Michigan University on Saturday (Feb. 25) for a 1:00 PM start.
