UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw
Valley State University men’s basketball team defeated Wayne
State University, 68-63 Thursday (Feb. 4) in a Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match up.
The Cardinals entered the locker room at halftime up by six,
28-22. Saginaw held the lead through the entire first half. Greg Foster
(Indianapolis, Ind. / T.C. Howe HS) led the team in points with
seven, while teammate Avery Stephenson
(Romulus, Mich.) put up six points of his own and pulled down three
rebounds.
Saginaw Valley would hold their biggest lead of the game when they
went up 15 point at 9:51 in the contest. Meijer “Player of
the Game” Chris Webb (Saginaw,
Mich. / Saginaw Arthur Hill) led the Cardinals with 13 points while
Foster added six. Stephenson and sophomore Josh Eisenga (McBain,
Mich. / McBain HS) both grabbed four rebounds for Saginaw Valley.
The Cardinals shot 19-for-23 from behind the line in the second
half.
Webb ended the night with 16 points, while Foster added 13 and
junior Dan
Genther (Laingsburg, Mich.) netted 12. Stephenson ended the
night with eight points and pulled down seven rebounds.
With the win, Saginaw Valley improves to 13-7 overall on the
season, and 10-5 in the GLIAC, while Wayne State falls to 10-9
overall on the season and 8-7 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals will be
back in action on Saturday (Feb. 6) when they take on Northwood
University at the Ryder Center. Tip off is scheduled for
7:00pm.
